Sandhyas

Pujya Swami Chinmayananda
While doing sadhana, do not make it a prolonged affair. It should not be painful and agonising. Never do your sadhana looking at the watch. Do not force the mind, but persuade the mind by all means. Encourage the mind. And that inspiration of the mind would come through the kirtan. When that attitude has come, then do a little japa. If you like, a little study may precede or follow the japa and then go into meditation.  Kirtan, japa, meditation etc. should be short and intense. It should be thrilling.
When you are trying to meditate, remember we are not yet yogis. A long period of sadhana is necessary. In the jnana path, what is important is not the length of time, but the depth or intensity in meditation. If you can keep up the memory of the meditation for four hours, it is much more glorious that trying to extend the actual meditation. Try to outshine each day your own depth of experience on the previous day. Try to have and cherish in memory that divine experience for a longer period of time during the day. That is why we have got three sandhyas prescribed in our Sastras
