Makara Samkranti Significance


*As per the Puranas, on this day, Surya (Sun) visits the house of his son Shani (Saturn), who is the lord of the Makar rashi.

*Acharya Bhisma gave up his mortal coils in this period. Till this period Bhishma waited in the same arrow striken body. It is believed that he who passes away in this period attains the higher lokas & freedom from the transmigration cycle.

* Devayana begins with this day.

* Mahavishnu slayed & buried the asuras below the Mandara parvata on this day. Hence, this day serves as an inspiration for one to do away with bad deeds & find a new beginning.

*Rishi Bhagirat is known to have done tarpan to his ancestors on this day, thereby redeeming them from their curse.

* It is a recommended practice to perform the shat-tila karma on this day.

* It is a customary practice to consume jaggery & sesame on this day. A kannada saying goes, "yellu bella thindu olle mathanaduva"- "May we consume sesame & jaggery & speak good words".

* The makar jyoti of Sabarimala becomes visible on this day.

*The festival is known through many names like Pongal, Bihu, Suggi, Magha Saaja, Khichidi,etc
